The Mayor's own word's

As we start a new millennium, I would like to go back to my first term in office as Mayor of Rebecca. I said two things when I ran for office in 1997, that I would make a difference and be a full time Mayor. I hope to continue to do the best I can for Rebecca in my second term in office.

We have had an amazing two years in Rebecca. We have had three streets resurfaced under the LARP Program with the department of transportation. We built a very nice new firehouse with the grant that Rep. Ray Holland and Sen. Rooney Bowen helped us acquire throught the state. Turner County Commissioners also helped fund the new firehouse along with SPLOST funds. The Ashburn Turner County Chamber of Commerce had a great ribbon cutting ceremony for the firehouse and an open house for our lovely new renovated city hall. We had a wonderful turnout for both events, thank you to all the residents and friends of Rebecca that took the time to come to be a part of these events.

When people come through Rebecca or stop to visit they comment on what a beautiful clean town we have and that is due to our residents complying with the Clean up Ordinance the City Council signed. We also signed the ordinance to enforce the State of Georgia's minimum building codes.

Due to no opposition from 1982-96 there was no elections held. We had our first election since 1982 in Rebecca in 1997 because Rebecca residents began to show an interest in their elected officials and the manner in which they were conducting the city's business. The residents of Rebecca elected their first black council member, Henry Aplin, in 1999. The City Council meets the first Monday of each month in Rebecca City Hall at 6:30pm. I invite everyone to come and see and be a witness to the progress and work that your elected officials are doing at these council meetings.

I have made an effort to be at all the Chamber of Commerce meetings and the 911 meetings to voice Rebecca's concerns and will continue to do so.

Karen Watson, Rebecca's City Clerk is the first certified clerk Rebecca has ever had and is doing a fine job. We have all worked together to make all these things possible, residents, council members and employees. I hope we will continue to work together for the betterment of the Town of Rebecca. Thanks to the residents of Rebecca for their support.

Sincerely,
Mayor
Harold Ethridge
